Huxley sits just off Interstate 35 along Highway 69, close enough to both Ames and the north edge of the Des Moines metro that much of the town runs on a commuter rhythm. That location shaped its houses. The original town is small — a compact grid of older frame homes near the center — but the far larger share of Huxley's housing went up in recent decades, as subdivisions spread out over what had been farm ground on the town's edges, filling in around the Ballard school campuses.
Those newer homes were built in a fairly tight window and with a fairly narrow set of materials, so a great many of them wear the same builder-grade vinyl siding. Fifteen to twenty-five years on, that siding is old enough to show it: fading on the south and west walls that take the most sun, a brittleness that lets a stray ball or a hailstone crack a panel, and loose or rattling sections after the straight-line summer winds that cross open country before they reach town.

The thing that catches Huxley homeowners off guard is color matching. Because so many houses here went up close together using the same handful of vinyl lines, the original color is often discontinued by the time you actually need a repair — so a patched section never quite blends with the rest of the wall. When only part of a home is damaged, it is usually smarter to reside a full elevation, corner to corner, than to chase a match that no longer exists.
